TIME CHANGES no longer make sense
During the oil crisis in the seventies, the summer time was gradually introduced in the European countries in order to save energy. In the meantime, whenever the next change of time approches the discussion breaks out whether the changes in light and heat still sufficiently justify to keep these time shifts. My opinion is to abolish the annual change from summer to winter time or vice versa.
At the same time, it could be considered to examine the need to keep up the three current time zones in the European Union or whether they should be eliminated. Different time zones cause numerous problems in modern life, in economic cooperation, and especially in the transport and communications industry. They cause unnecessary costs. There is a need to emphasize the common and to focus on efficiency and cost effectivness.
A general objective of European policy should be the harmonisation across countries in day to day issues if there are no obstacles concerning relevant regional or cultural features.
Health should also play an important role in assessing new policies. In cancer research, epidemiological studies have shown that the chronic "jetlag" can lead to chronic disturbances of the human beings' internal clock and cancer risk.
Over 6 years ago, Russia carried out a harmonization of time for the European territory, which seems to have been a success.
Specifically, I propose to abandon the three time zones within the EU and to determine the Central European summer time to be the
UNIFIED EUROPEAN TIME.
I invite European institutions, NGO's, media and other interested parties to take up this proposal and to make a decision before the next change of time.
